Why You Should Set Spiritual Goals For Yourself
Personally, setting spiritual goals has deepened my relationship with God. I used to really struggle with viewing God as a “real” person, with thoughts and feelings that genuinely care about me. You may feel the same.
The scripture at James 4:8 has been an encouraging scripture for me, in part, says:
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.
If we want a close, personal relationship with our Creator, setting spiritual goals is the first step to achieve this.
Setting spiritual goals will also help you to stay focused on what really is important in life. We make so many other goals, especially new year’s resolution, where our main focus is on losing weight, making more money or other material pursuits.
Where does your spirituality fall on your personal list of other goals? When you are intentional about setting spiritual goals, it will help you gain and improve the qualities you need to have a better quality of life. As Phillipians 1:10 states:
so that you may approve the things that are superior and may be pure and blameless in the day of Christ.
This is what we want to work on in order to gain salvation.
When we set and work on reaching spiritual goals, we become a better person. For example, can you imagine the type of world it would be if everyone made applying the scripture in Romans 13:8-10 a priority? Those verses read:
8 Do not owe anyone anything, except to love one another, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not covet; and any other commandment, are summed up by this commandment: Love your neighbor as yourself. 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor. Love, therefore, is the fulfillment of the law.”
Following bible warnings, examples and principles can help you to be the best version of yourself.
There are so many other reasons why you should set spiritual goals but the last one we will discuss here is that they will help you to strengthen your faith. We all lose faith sometimes, in ourselves, in our family, friends and even God.
This is especially true when we are going tough times. Focusing on the spiritual goals that we set serve as constant reminders that God is here for us to help us through whatever we are going through. He may not eliminate the trial for us, but he will provide the strength to endure our challenges. In Matthew 21:21, it says:
Jesus answered them, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you tell this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will be done.”
Can you even begin to imagine what you can accomplish by working hard on building up your faith? Setting and achieving your spiritual goals can help you to move mountains!
Examples of Spiritual Goals You Can Set For Yourself
Firstly, we can set the goal of having a closer relationship with God. You can find more self-searching questions in the worksheet but let’s start by asking, “how can I become closer to my Creator?”
Try to personalize each goal: Why is this goal important to me? What steps can I take today to reach my goals?
Secondly, you may want to make it your goal to read the bible every single day. So you can ask yourself; how can I incorporate daily bible reading in my daily schedule?
Thirdly, you may decide to work on the quality of your prayer to God. It is so easy to fall into a prayer routine where our prayers are repetitive and not personal.
We want to aim for our prayers to be similar to a conversation we would have to someone very close to us. Someone we can unburden ourselves on, thank them for the help they provide or just someone to talk to when we feel lonely and misunderstood.
Last, but certainly not least, to deepen our friendship with God, ensure that we ready the bible daily and have meaningful prayers, we can make it a goal to bible journal every day.
You can read a scripture, meditate on it and write down how you feel about what you read. You can also journal about what each bible example teaches you and how you can apply each bible principles in your life. You can talk to God about what you are learning and pray for guidance and understanding.
The list of goals you set for yourself can go on and on. Improving ourselves and our relationship with God is an ongoing process. There will be times when we falter in working on our goals, but our God is a loving and forgiving God.
